BACKING UP NETWORKS, SERVERS AND MAPPED DRIVES : HOW TO SET UP THE BACKUP SERVICE WITH ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS

When backing up a server, ideally you should install the backup software directly onto the server itself and backup the information directly.

The software will backup most networked systems, which are mapped to a drive letter and to ensure your backups run automatically you must follow these instructions (you need to carry out both of these):

  1. Open the software and do not select the files directly via the drive letter, instead select them via the “Network Neighbourhood Icon”. Click on the ‘+’ next to Network Neighbourhood and select the information that you wish to backup from your mapped drive.
  2. Once you have selected the information to backup go to the services area on your computer (see below), select ‘automated backup daemon’ and enter your Windows Logon details.

IMPORTANT: If you do not have a password for your computer (required for the services area), you will need to set one up as the service will not work without this.

To set up the software as a 'Service' using Windows NT

  1. From the Start menu in the Windows taskbar Select > Settings > Control Panel
  2. Double click > Services
  3. Select 'Automated Backup Daemon' from the list
  4. Click > Startup...
  5. Select > This Account:
  6. Either:
    1. Type user name or
    2. Click '...' button to display 'Add User' dialog and select user from list. Click > Add and then Click > OK
  7. Enter user's password in both password fields.
  8. Click > OK
  9. Click > Stop
  10. Click > Start
  11. Click > Close

To set up the software as a 'Service' using Windows 2000

  1. From the Start menu in the Windows taskbar Select > Settings > Control Panel
  2. Select > Administrative Tools > Services
  3. Right click 'Automated Backup Daemon' and select > Properties
  4. Select > Log On tab
  5. Select > This Account:
  6. Either:
    1. Type user name or
    2. Click > Browse and select user
  7. Enter user's password in both password fields.
  8. Click > OK
  9. Click > Restart

Important Note:

To perform a scheduled backup using a dial up connection under Windows 2000, the dial up connection password will need to be re-entered manually in the 'Change My Account Details' window.

To do this:

  1. From the Start menu in the Windows taskbar Select > Programs > Online Backup > Update my Account Details
  2. Scroll down to the “Connection” section
  3. Ensure settings for the connection are correct as auto filled in
  4. Manually overwrite the “Dialup user password”
  5. Click “Submit”

To set up the software as a 'Service' using Windows XP

  1. From the Start menu in the Windows taskbar Select > Settings > Control Panel
  2. Select > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services
  3. Right click 'Automated Backup Daemon' and select > Properties
  4. Select > Log On tab
  5. Select > This Account:
  6. Either:
    1. Type user name or
    2. Click > Browse and select user
  7. Enter user's password in both password fields.
  8. Click > OK
  9. Click > Restart

Windows 9x

Under Windows 9x (which does not have NT's services or security) an account cannot be set for the service. The service will always run with the username and password of the currently logged in user.

Mapped network drives can be backed up if the current user has them mapped. Files selected through the 'Network Neighbourhood' icon can be backed up if the current user can access them, or if they can be accessed without a username and password.

If no user is logged in, files to be backed up over the network must be accessible without a username and password. This is not usually possible if these files are stored on a Windows NT/2000/XP system.

Important Notes for Windows NT, XP and 2000:

It is only possible for the 'Service' to use a single Windows account.

The same account should be used by the software 'Service' and the user defining the backups, otherwise it may be possible for the user to select files, which the 'Service' cannot access, causing automated backups to fail.

If the above instructions do not work for you, please in the first instance re-boot your machine and then try again. Re-booting often clears the system.

Please note that although you will always be able to back up your information using the "Backup Now" button (i.e manually), Scheduled or Automatic backups will only work on Windows 9x, NT, XP and 2000/3 if you have followed the above instructions.

This is because when the software runs automatically (scheduled) it works as a 'Service'.
